Sunset in Provincetown, MA

by Pat on October 18, 2010

I had a blast shooting this past weekend with Brian Matiash and Jacob Lucas. I can’t wait to do it again! It was a very early Saturday morning for me since I had to drive out to the eastern part of the state to meet up with the guys. Shortly after I got there we hit the road. Our agenda was to head into Cape Cod and make our way to Provincetown for sunset. Whatever else came our way during the trip, we would stop and bracket it, then move on. With that in mind we did make a few stops, and I filled up a compact flash card with brackets. It’s going to be a fun week to process these images!

Today’s photo is from one of the Provincetown beaches at sunset. It was really quite a weird area filled with old boats, lobster cages and the like. It was open to the public and just a few feet from the ocean. I don’t know if this is some sort of junk yard for these guys or if they were washed up from some storm. Either way, it was very interesting to come across it.

This image is also unique for me since I never shoot into the sun. Whenever I shoot into the sun, it never seems to work out for me. After reading a recent entry on Brian’s blog and on Jacob’s blog about shooting into the sun, it inspired me to try it out. Hey, if I got stuck I knew who to ask for help, right? So I pointed my camera at the sun, set the Promote Control for 9 brackets, and off I went. What do you guys think of the end result? Not too bad for my first attempt at shooting into the sun! I’m glad I tried it out – this is one of my favorite shots from the day.

Sunset Surfing

by Pat on September 6, 2010

I love California. The nice weather, the beaches and beautiful sights are what keeps me in a constant day dream of going back. Since the company I work for has a couple offices in Southern California, I’ve had the opportunity to head out that way quite a few times. It’s great being out there on business since it’s a free trip. However, those free trips don’t usually come with much free time. So photography opportunities are very slim. Finally earlier this year we decided to go back, but for vacation. We had so much fun being able to just stroll around on our schedule.

Here’s a few surfers at Huntington Beach catching the last waves of the day as the sun sets behind the mountains. This was also one of the last frames for me for that night.

Sun sitting on the horizon

by Pat on January 4, 2010

Took a photo at work today of the sun setting. This technique is called HDR or High Dynamic Range, which takes 3 photographs and merges them together so the photo has even exposure. This technique is especially helpful when shooting into the sun, and/or shooting high contrast areas.

You can click on the photo for larger sizes, and more detail.
