Have you ever been in a Bison Jam? Me neither, until I went to Yellowstone. A Bison Jam is where the Bison block the road causing a traffic headache. We were stuck in one for about 2 hours! The traffic back up finally caught the attention of the park rangers who tried to persuade the Bison off of the road by playing chicken with their SUV. The Bison were not phased. They tried sirens and their air horns – not even a flinch from the Bison. I guess when you weigh 1 ton, not much phases you! I had read that the Bison at Yellowstone think they own the park, and while technically they do, they sure aren’t shy about acting like it.
I’m not sure what made the Bison decide to move, but he finally did! Nothing like sitting in the same spot for 2 hours with nothing to do! While we were waiting, it was fun watching the other Bison around us play with each other. There had to have been 100 Bison within our general vicinity while we were waiting out the Bison Jam.
The photo above is one of the talkative Bison’s near the river, caught with the rented Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS. The sound they make reminded me of some sort of growling alien creature. Pretty weird! Below is another photo from my side view mirror reflection showing the Bison Jam. At this point we had manage to get by, but it doesn’t look like others were so lucky!
