2010 Worldwide Photowalk

This past weekend I went out to Boston to take part in the Worldwide Photowalk. I had a great time finally meeting my Twitter photographer friends in person. We started the day out early at the Sam Adams Brewery, headed over to the Christian Science Center, then met up with the photowalk group at the World Trade Center.

The shot above is a 3-shot HDR photo taken from the Courthouse area of Boston. I wanted to try and show the nasty humidity that was also in town for the photowalk. You can clearly see how “thick” the air is where the sun is shining through the buildings.

Shots like this make me wish I had the Promote Control! The Canon only allows for 3 bracket shots at a time, and the Promote Control can do much more than that. It’s tough getting an evenly toned HDR when shooting directly into the sun with only 3 images to work with. After seeing the Promote Control in person this past weekend, I’ve added it to my wish list!

I’m jealous of those Promote Control owners too (Brian Matiash – that means you!) but I get round the problem without spending $300 by checking my histograms and, if necessary, switching out of auto-bracketing and taking additional exposures by tweaking the exposure compensation or, if I’m in manual as is more common these days, setting the shutter speed directly. Infinite bracketing options without spending a bucketload of cash!

Yeah I can get around it too, I have my C1 setup for -2, 0, +2 AEB, then my C2 is setup for -4, -2, 0, and my C3 is setup for 0, +2, +4… I get some duplicate shots this way, but I can still get a better AEB spread than the 3 exposure restriction built in.

I think this extra “manual” work still fuels my want for the Promote!

I think I just found my favorite HDR shot. I absolutely love how it utilizes HDR to get rich colors, but doesn’t turn every object into sparkly unicorn rainbows. The light is simply killer amazing.

Now for my Casual Photographer Question of the Week: Why is it so necessary that you shoot with bracket shooting mode? Can’t you just manually adjust the aperture (It is aperture for an HDR, right?) each shot? Or is it just that the camera must remain absolutely still throughout the shots and touching a knob is too much of a movement?

To answer your question, it’s exposure you want to play with. The aperature will stay consistent throughout the shots, and exposure will control your shutter speed automatically. You could manually expose each shot if you’d like – but the auto bracketing just makes things so much faster and easier. It’s best to use it with a tripod and a remote shutter release cable. Set your aperture (I usually use f/8 or f/11), then just press and hold the release button. The camera will do the rest – no need to fiddle with dials mid-way through the shot!
